Finally is no longer operating. On September 8, 2026, Backoffice.co, Inc., the company that ran Finally, entered an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors and is being wound down by an estate managed by the restructuring firm Province. Finally's bookkeeping business was sold to Inkle, which now holds those contracts and says service continues with the same team. Everything else, including the other products and any outstanding balances, sits with the estate. If you were a Finally customer, you have three real options: stay with Inkle, move to another bookkeeping service, or bring the books in-house on QuickBooks or Xero with a reporting tool on top.
That is the short answer, taken from the notice on finally.com read on 2 October 2026. The rest of this article covers what changed for each kind of customer, what the alternatives cost, what to export before anything else moves, and how to keep monthly financial statements going for your lender and partners while you decide.
What happened to Finally and who now holds your account
The finally.com homepage now carries a notice headed "Finally (Backoffice.co, Inc.) is no longer operating." It says the company's affairs are handled by an estate, PFS Finally Liquidation LLC, managed by Province. Bookkeeping customers are pointed to Inkle with a single button. For all other matters, which the notice lists as claims, outstanding balances, other products and services, and general questions about the company, customers are told to contact the estate's representative at Province.
In practice that splits customers into two groups. If Finally only kept your books, your contract moved to Inkle and nothing stops this month. If you also used Finally for the rest of the back office it sold, such as corporate cards, bill pay, invoicing or payment collection, those products are outside the Inkle deal and you need replacements for them, not just a new bookkeeper.
This is the second time in two years a venture-backed bookkeeping company has gone this way. Bench shut down abruptly at the end of December 2024 and was bought days later, and Botkeeper announced its closure in February 2026. The pattern is worth noting when you pick the next vendor, because the cost of a provider failing is not the fee. It is the scramble to get your own data back.
Finally bookkeeping alternatives compared
| Option | What you get | Published price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay with Inkle | Your existing Finally bookkeeping team under Inkle, plus Inkle's tax and compliance services | Bookkeeping service from $49 a month, scaling with volume; software Standard $30 a month; GAAP financials $150 | Customers whose only Finally product was bookkeeping and who are happy with the team |
| Pilot | Managed bookkeeping for startups and small businesses, with tax and CFO add-ons | Priced by monthly expenses on pilot.com/pricing; CFO plans from $1,750 a month billed annually | Funded startups that want another full-service provider |
| Zeni | AI bookkeeping with a finance team, bill pay, reimbursements and banking | $494 or $719 a month billed annually | Startups that want bookkeeping and bill pay from one vendor |
| Puzzle or Digits | AI-native general ledgers you run yourself or with a bookkeeper | Puzzle from $30 a month; Digits $65 or $100 a month | Founders comfortable owning the ledger |
| QuickBooks Online or Xero plus a local bookkeeper | The most common US setup, with any CPA able to pick up the file | Ledger subscription plus the bookkeeper's monthly fee | Businesses that never want their data inside one vendor again |
| AIStatements on top of any of these | Tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with commentary from a ledger export | From $24 a month billed yearly, $49 billed monthly | Anyone who needs the monthly pack for a lender, partners or investors while the books move |
Finally's own price list is no longer online. Third-party listings that still describe it put its bookkeeping plans from about $299 a month, so most former customers will find the alternatives above priced at or below what they were paying. Get any quote in writing against your real monthly transaction count, since every service on the list prices by volume.
Should you stay with Inkle?
For a bookkeeping-only customer, staying is the lowest-friction choice, and it is a reasonable one. The same people keep doing the work, the chart of accounts does not change, and Inkle publishes its prices: bookkeeping service from $49 a month, scaling with transactions and complexity, and C-corporation and S-corporation returns from $650 a year. It is built for US startups, including foreign-owned ones, with Delaware franchise tax and Form 5472 handling.
Three things are worth checking before you settle. First, confirm in writing what your monthly price will be after the transition, because your Finally contract terms and Inkle's list prices are not the same thing. Second, ask whether your books stay in the same ledger or move into Inkle's own general ledger, and how you would export them if you left later. Third, if you used Finally for cards, bill pay or invoicing, Inkle did not buy those, so plan for them separately.
What to export before anything else moves
Whatever you choose, get your own copy of the records now. A wind-down estate has every reason to keep systems running for a while, but no reason to keep them running for you indefinitely. Ask for, or download:
- A general ledger detail report and a trial balance for every closed month and every year end since you started with Finally.
- The monthly financial statements Finally delivered, as PDF and as spreadsheets.
- Bank and card reconciliations, with the statements they were reconciled to.
- Vendor and customer lists, open bills and open invoices, and 1099 vendor data.
- Receipts and supporting documents attached to transactions.
The trial balance is the one that matters most. With a trial balance per month, any new bookkeeper can rebuild the opening position, and any reporting tool can rebuild your statements. If bill pay ran through Finally, your new process also has to cover approvals and payment runs; a dedicated accounts payable automation tool handles invoices, approvals and vendor payments without tying them to whoever keeps the books.
Keep your monthly financials going during the switch
The month you change bookkeepers is usually the month the reporting slips. The new provider is onboarding, the catch-up takes priority, and the P&L your bank asked for under the loan covenant or the update your partners expect does not get built. That is a separate job from bookkeeping, and you can run it yourself.
Export the trial balance or general ledger for the month from wherever the books now live, whether that is Inkle, QuickBooks Online, Xero or the files Finally gave you, and upload it to AIStatements. It maps the accounts, builds the profit and loss statement, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement, checks that they tie, and writes a short analysis of what moved. You get a PDF and an Excel workbook in about a minute. Our monthly financial reporting package page shows the full pack, and the same file works when the books move again, because it reads the export rather than a single vendor's system.
AIStatements does not keep books, categorize transactions or reconcile accounts. You still need Inkle, a service or a bookkeeper for that. What it removes is the dependency: your reporting no longer stops because a provider changed hands.
How to choose the next provider
Start with the question Finally's closure forces: if this vendor disappeared next year, how long would it take to get my books out? Prefer providers that keep you on a standard ledger such as QuickBooks Online or Xero, or that give you a full general ledger export on request. Then compare on the things that cost money: price at your real transaction count, close speed, and whether tax filing is included or a separate bill.
If you are a funded startup that wants one vendor for everything, compare Inkle with managed services; we price Zeni plan by plan on our Zeni AI alternative page. If you would rather own the ledger, an AI-native ledger like Puzzle is worth a look, and our Puzzle accounting alternative page covers what it costs. Frequently asked questions
Is Finally still in business?
No. Backoffice.co, Inc., which operated as Finally, entered an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors on September 8, 2026 and is being wound down by an estate managed by Province. Its bookkeeping business was acquired by Inkle, which now services those customers with the same team.
Who bought Finally's bookkeeping business?
Inkle, a US accounting and tax automation company for startups. Finally's notice says Inkle holds the bookkeeping contracts and service continues as before. Other Finally products, claims and outstanding balances are handled by the estate, not by Inkle.
How much does Inkle bookkeeping cost for former Finally customers?
Inkle's public price list shows bookkeeping service from $49 a month, scaling with transaction volume and complexity, and accounting software Standard at $30 a month, read on 2 October 2026. Your transferred contract may carry different terms, so ask Inkle to confirm your monthly price in writing.
How do I get my financial data out of Finally?
Ask your bookkeeping team, now at Inkle, for a general ledger detail and a trial balance for every closed month and year end, plus delivered statements, reconciliations and attachments. For anything outside bookkeeping, contact the estate's representative listed on finally.com. Do it now rather than at the next tax deadline.
Can I still produce monthly financial statements while I switch bookkeepers?
Yes. Export a trial balance or general ledger for the month from the current ledger and upload it to AIStatements. It produces a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement with commentary in about a minute, from $24 a month billed yearly, independent of which bookkeeper you end up with. See plans and pricing.
