Puzzle Accounting Alternative, Puzzle Accounting Pricing and Keeping QuickBooks Compared for Startups

The main Puzzle accounting alternatives are QuickBooks Online or Xero with a bookkeeper or AI add-on for founders who want to keep their ledger, Digits for another AI-native ledger, Pilot or Bench for done-for-you bookkeeping, and AIStatements for founders whose need is the finished statement pack. Puzzle costs $30, $72, $120 or $360 a month by plan, read from puzzle.io/pricing on 28 September 2026, with 20 percent off yearly. AIStatements builds a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with burn, runway and written analysis from a QuickBooks, Xero or CSV export from $39 a month, with no migration.

Puzzle is an AI general ledger built for startups, and it replaces QuickBooks or Xero rather than reading from it. If what you need is a clean monthly P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with burn and runway written up for your investors, you can get that from the books you already keep.

What Puzzle accounting actually is

Puzzle sells itself as AI accounting software for startups, and the product is a general ledger. It is not a reporting layer that reads your QuickBooks company; its Core plan is labeled, in Puzzle's own words, "Your QuickBooks replacement". Transactions come in through native connections to the tools startups already run on, including Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp, Deel and Gusto, and Puzzle says its AI handles up to 98 percent of categorization, with reconciliation, accruals and revenue recognition on the higher plans.

The appeal for a seed or Series A company is obvious. Cash and accrual books come from the same ledger, burn, runway and margin update continuously instead of once a month, and the financial statements are drafted automatically. For a founder opening books for the first time, with no accountant yet and no history to move, Puzzle is a reasonable first ledger and we would not argue you out of trying it.

Why founders and their accountants look for a Puzzle accounting alternative

The first reason is the migration. Moving to Puzzle means moving the books: the history, the chart of accounts, open bills and invoices, and every rule your bookkeeper built in QuickBooks or Xero. Puzzle charges $149 for a white-glove migration, which is fair, but the real cost is everything downstream. Your fractional CFO, your tax preparer, your payroll provider and, later, the auditor and the acquirer's diligence team all expect a ledger they already know, and a QuickBooks file is the one most of them ask for.

The second is the accountant. Plenty of startups already have a bookkeeper or a CPA firm keeping the books in QuickBooks Online. Asking that firm to move one client onto a new ledger to get better reporting rarely goes well, and the firm is often the one producing the monthly statements anyway.

The third is that drafted statements are not a finished investor pack. Puzzle shows live financials and metrics inside the app. What the board or your investors receive each month or quarter is usually a formatted P&L, balance sheet and cash flow that tie, plus a short paragraph on why burn moved and how many months of runway are left. Somebody still writes that paragraph and lays out the pack.

The fourth is where you are in the plan ladder. Variance analysis, burn and runway insights sit on Core at $72 a month, and AI reconciliations, classes, departments and revenue recognition on Complete at $120. If the reporting is what you wanted, you are paying for a ledger to get it.

Puzzle accounting pricing by plan

Read from puzzle.io/pricing on 28 September 2026, Puzzle sells four software plans billed monthly, with 20 percent off when billed yearly. Starter is $30 a month for one seat, with auto-categorization, auto-drafted financial statements, cash and accrual books, unlimited connections and a one-click tax report. Core is $72 a month for five seats and adds cash, burn, runway and margin insights, spend and revenue tracking, variance analysis, advanced reporting, a custom chart of accounts and multi-entity through an integration. Complete is $120 a month, marked most popular, with unlimited seats, AI accuracy review, AI reconciliations, classes, departments and projects, revenue recognition and priority support. Scale is $360 a month for higher volume, with subledgers, backup and restore and dedicated onboarding.

Puzzle also sells service on top of the software. Core plus Expert Reviewed bookkeeping is $171 a month for companies with up to $10,000 a month in expenses, one entity and no payroll processing; full-service bookkeeping is priced by monthly expense band. Add-ons are priced up front: migration $149 once, catch-up bookkeeping from $300 per month of books, tax filing from $1,250 a year plus $250 per state, and an R&D credit study at 1.5 percent of qualified expenses.

AIStatements publishes every tier and does not charge per seat. Starter is $39 a month billed yearly or $49 month to month for one company. Growth is $99 a month billed yearly or $119 month to month for five companies and adds quarterly and trailing-twelve-month views, a board-deck layout and an investor update draft. Firm is $289 a month billed yearly or $349 month to month for up to 25 client companies. The full list is on the pricing page.

Puzzle alternatives, sorted by what you are really buying

Most lists of Puzzle alternatives mix three different purchases. Separate them first and the price comparison gets simple.

If you want a new ledger with the bookkeeping automated, compare Puzzle with Digits, the other AI-native general ledger (see our Digits accounting alternative page for its plans), and with QuickBooks Online or Xero run by a bookkeeper. If you want someone to do the books for you, the comparison is Puzzle's Expert Reviewed and full-service tiers against Pilot, Bench and a local bookkeeper. If you want to stay on QuickBooks and have AI take over categorization and reconciliation inside it, the add-ons on our AI accounting software comparison are priced side by side.

If what you want is the output, meaning monthly statements that tie and an investor-ready summary of burn and runway, you do not need to replace or automate the ledger at all. That is the job AIStatements does, and the deliverable is described on investor reporting.

What AIStatements does instead

You keep your ledger and your bookkeeper. Export a general ledger, a transaction list or an adjusted trial balance from QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero or anything that writes a CSV, and upload it. AIStatements builds the profit and loss statement, the balance sheet and the statement of cash flows, and checks that they tie: net income flows into retained earnings, and ending cash on the cash flow statement matches cash on the balance sheet.

It then computes gross and net margin, monthly burn, runway, current ratio and days sales outstanding, writes the analysis in plain English, flags lines that look like posting errors, and exports a PDF and an Excel workbook in about a minute. On Growth the same pack comes in a board-deck layout with an investor update draft, so the monthly or quarterly email to your investors starts from numbers that already tie. A ready example of the output is on the cash flow statement generator page.

What AIStatements does not do is bookkeeping. It does not categorize bank transactions, reconcile accounts, recognize revenue or file taxes. If the reason you looked at Puzzle was to stop doing the books yourself, Puzzle, Digits or a bookkeeper is the right purchase, and AIStatements can still produce the pack from whichever ledger you end up on.

How to decide between Puzzle and keeping QuickBooks

Start with where the time goes. If it goes into the bookkeeping, hours every month categorizing Brex and Mercury lines and chasing receipts, then a new AI ledger can pay for itself and the migration is worth doing early, before there is much history to move. Try Puzzle on a real bank account and count how many transactions it gets right without you.

If the books are already kept, by a bookkeeper, a fractional CFO or your CPA firm, and the pain is turning them into something the board reads, changing ledgers is the long way round. Run one month of your existing QuickBooks or Xero export through AIStatements and compare the pack with what you sent last quarter. For one company the decision is $39 to $49 a month against a ledger migration.

Common questions

What are the best Puzzle accounting alternatives?

For another AI-native ledger, Digits. For a standard ledger, QuickBooks Online or Xero with a bookkeeper or an AI add-on. For done-for-you books, Pilot or Bench. For finished statements with burn, runway and written analysis from the books you already keep, AIStatements, from $39 a month with no migration.

How much does Puzzle accounting cost?

Puzzle costs $30 a month on Starter, $72 on Core, $120 on Complete and $360 on Scale when billed monthly, with 20 percent off yearly, read from puzzle.io/pricing on 28 September 2026. Expert Reviewed bookkeeping starts at $171 a month, and migration from QuickBooks or Xero is $149 once.

Is Puzzle a replacement for QuickBooks?

Yes. Puzzle is its own general ledger, and its Core plan is billed as a QuickBooks replacement, so using it means moving your books off QuickBooks or Xero. If you want better startup reporting without changing ledgers, use a reporting tool that reads your QuickBooks export instead.

Is Puzzle good for startups?

Puzzle is built for startups: native Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp and Gusto connections, cash and accrual books, and burn and runway metrics. It suits a founder opening books from scratch. A startup with an established QuickBooks file and a bookkeeper usually gets more from keeping the ledger and improving the reporting.

Can I get investor-ready financial statements without switching from QuickBooks?

Yes. AIStatements reads a QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop or Xero export, builds a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement, calculates burn and runway, writes the analysis in plain English and exports PDF and Excel in about a minute. Growth adds a board-deck layout and an investor update draft.

Does Puzzle do my taxes?

Puzzle produces a one-click tax report on every plan and sells tax filing as an add-on from $1,250 a year plus $250 per state, prepared by a partner firm. AIStatements does not file taxes; it produces the financial statements your tax preparer, board and lender read.
