Accounting CS Alternative: CS Professional Suite, Engagement Manager and Workpapers CS Compared for Write-Up Firms
AIStatements is an Accounting CS alternative for firms whose output is after-the-fact write-up, compilations and monthly client statements rather than audit engagements. It takes an adjusted trial balance or a QuickBooks, Xero or CSV export and returns a formatted, tied income statement, balance sheet and cash flow in about a minute, with the analysis written, from $39 a month, with no data conversion and no implementation project. It is not a full accounting or payroll system, so firms that run client payroll inside Accounting CS still need one.
Thomson Reuters publishes a migration path out of Accounting CS and Workpapers CS into Engagement Manager, a product it markets to audit professionals. If your firm does write-up and monthly client statements rather than audits, that migration is the moment to check whether you are about to buy the wrong category of software.

Why write-up firms are shopping for an Accounting CS alternative right now
Accounting CS is the client accounting and write-up product in the Thomson Reuters CS Professional Suite: after-the-fact and live bookkeeping across a client roster, a working trial balance, client payroll, and financial statements produced from the balances. Workpapers CS sits beside it as the trial balance and workpaper product, importing balances from a spreadsheet, verifying them and transferring the adjusted figures into UltraTax CS, GoSystem Tax RS, Lacerte, ProSystem fx Tax or ProSeries. Firms have run practices on both for years, and neither is a bad product.
What changed is where Thomson Reuters is pointing. The company publishes a documented migration path from Workpapers CS or Accounting CS into Engagement Manager, its cloud engagement product, and the migration moves real assets: workpapers with their trial balance links and formulas, current and prior year adjusted, report and tax balances, account numbers, descriptions and type codes, tax and property codes, and the custom account groupings and subcodes a firm spent years building. Checked 4 September 2026, the migration guidance sets no deadline and is explicit that firms schedule it when a new year of work begins or during a slower period. This is a push toward the cloud, not a shutdown.
The reason it still matters is the destination. Thomson Reuters describes Engagement Manager as a cloud-based engagement management tool for audit professionals, and its marketed features read that way: a working trial balance sized for large consolidation and fund clients, workpaper governance, engagement status dashboards, and Audit Intelligence Analyze for scanning every transaction to surface risk. That is a serious audit product. It is also a strange thing to migrate a write-up practice into.
The question the migration forces: are you buying write-up, workpapers or output?
Three different jobs hide inside the CS Professional Suite, and firms rarely separate them until a migration makes them. The first is the ledger itself, the after-the-fact bookkeeping and client payroll that Accounting CS runs. The second is the workpaper layer, the adjustments and groupings that Workpapers CS holds and that Engagement Manager is designed to hold in the cloud. The third is the deliverable, the statement set the client or the lender actually receives.
Most small write-up practices are paying for all three and using the third one hardest. The monthly cycle is bank feeds in, adjustments posted, accounts grouped, statements out. The engagement apparatus around it, the sign-off workflow, the evidence trail, the review notes, exists for assurance work the firm may issue two or three times a year, or never. When the vendor moves you onto a platform built for audit teams, the mismatch gets more expensive rather than less.
The split is worth making explicitly. If your firm signs audit or review reports, you need an engagement platform and Engagement Manager is a credible one. If your firm issues compilations, monthly management statements, lender packages and year-end packets for small businesses, the part you use every month is the statement generator, and it can be bought on its own. Our comparison of financial statement software for CPA firms works the same split vendor by vendor, and the equivalent decision on the Wolters Kluwer side is on our CCH ProSystem fx Engagement alternative page.
What you get instead of a suite
AIStatements starts where the workpaper ends. Upload an adjusted trial balance, a QuickBooks or Xero export, or a plain CSV, and it drafts the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows together, grouped into captions, formatted, footed and tied to one another. Net income flows from the P&L into retained earnings and anchors the cash flow, so the set is consistent by construction rather than because a reviewer caught the break.
The account grouping is remembered against the client, which is the same idea as the grouping schedules and subcodes an Accounting CS or Workpapers CS user already maintains, so the second period is an import rather than a rebuild. Our guide to trial balance mapping covers how that step works here. On top of the numbers it writes a plain-English read of margins, movements and anything that looks wrong, which the CS products leave you to compose in a word processor.
There is no data conversion to schedule, no engagements to create in advance, no documents to move and no Excel export and re-import to map. You export the balances you already have and upload them. The ledger-agnostic version of this workflow is on trial balance to financial statements software, and firms running it across a client roster should start at financial statement software for accounting firms.
The honest trade-off, and where Accounting CS wins
Accounting CS does several things AIStatements deliberately does not, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. It is a general ledger, so it holds the client's books rather than reading an export of them. It runs client payroll, including the filings, which is a whole product in itself and a real revenue line for many write-up practices. It handles live as well as after-the-fact bookkeeping across a roster, with the trial balance native to the file rather than imported. If you are running client payroll inside the suite, none of what follows displaces it.
Engagement Manager and Workpapers CS likewise do things we do not: workpapers tied to supporting documentation, sign-off and review workflow that stands up to peer review, formal notes and disclosures, and an audit trail across the engagement file. Workpapers CS also transfers adjusted balances straight into UltraTax CS, GoSystem Tax RS, Lacerte, ProSystem fx Tax and ProSeries, which is a genuine reason to stay inside the stack if tax preparation is the bulk of the work.
What we do better is the deliverable, and we do it for a fraction of the money. On compilations, monthly and quarterly management statements, lender packages and client-ready year-end sets, a suite is overhead carried for a document a much smaller tool produces faster. The pattern that works is a firm keeping whatever the assurance and payroll work genuinely requires and drafting everything else somewhere light. If you are weighing the drafting layer alone, financial statement drafting software covers it, and the SSARS side is on financial statement compilation software.
Nobody in this category publishes a price, including Thomson Reuters
Checked 4 September 2026, Thomson Reuters publishes no price for Accounting CS, Workpapers CS or Engagement Manager. The Workpapers CS product page routes to sales, and the Engagement Manager page offers a demo request. Pricing depends on your seat count, your module mix, whether payroll is included, and whether you take the software hosted through Virtual Office CS or install it locally, so a single list figure would not mean much even if one existed.
Be careful with the numbers that circulate for Accounting CS on review and listing sites. The specific per-license figures you will find trace back to a CPA Practice Advisor review published in 2014. A twelve-year-old license price is not a budget input, and repeating it here would be worse than saying nothing. Ask your account manager for a written quote with the seat count, the modules and the renewal uplift stated, and compare that.
One useful anchor exists, because AuditFile publishes: verified 3 September 2026, Professional is $199 per user per month and Pro Plus is $299, both lower on a one year agreement, with a 14 day trial and no annual contract required. When a cloud audit platform with AI features publishes that, a quote several times higher for comparable functionality is a conversation rather than a fact. The full category, including the standalone tools, is scored in trial balance software for accountants, and what Thomson Reuters licensing actually looks like is unpacked in Accounting CS pricing.
Testing an alternative without touching the migration
The cheapest way to find out whether you need the platform or only its output is to run one client both ways this month, before you commit to a migration schedule. Because AIStatements reads an export rather than converting a data file, nothing has to move: no engagements created in advance, no documents relocated, no groupings re-authored, no Excel round trip. Export the adjusted trial balance you already produce and upload it.
If the statement set that comes back is the set you were about to spend an afternoon assembling, you have your answer for that class of engagement, and you can size the migration to the work that genuinely needs the suite. If something an engagement file gives you is missing, you have learned that too, cheaply, with real client numbers rather than a vendor demo file.
For the sequence from adjusted balances to a finished set, see how to prepare financial statements from a trial balance. The other dominant engagement platform is covered on CaseWare alternatives, and the tool at the top of this page will draft a pack from your own trial balance so you can judge the output rather than the description.

Common questions
What is the difference between Accounting CS and Workpapers CS?
Accounting CS is the client accounting and write-up product: it holds the client's general ledger, runs after-the-fact and live bookkeeping across a roster, and handles client payroll. Workpapers CS is the trial balance and workpaper product: it imports balances from a spreadsheet, lets you verify and adjust them, and transfers the adjusted figures into UltraTax CS, GoSystem Tax RS, Lacerte, ProSystem fx Tax or ProSeries. Firms often license both.
Is Accounting CS being discontinued?
As of 4 September 2026, Thomson Reuters has published no end-of-life date for Accounting CS. What it has published is a migration path into Engagement Manager, its cloud product, for firms moving workpapers and trial balance data across. The guidance sets no deadline and tells firms to schedule the move at a new year of work or in a slower period, so treat it as a cloud push and ask your account manager for the support horizon in writing.
How much does Accounting CS cost?
Thomson Reuters does not publish a price. The product pages route to sales, and the figure depends on seat count, module mix, whether client payroll is included and whether you install locally or take it hosted through Virtual Office CS. Per-license figures circulating on review sites trace to a 2014 CPA Practice Advisor review and should not be used as a budget. Get a written quote with seats, modules and renewal uplift stated.
What is Thomson Reuters Engagement Manager?
Engagement Manager is Thomson Reuters' cloud engagement management product, marketed to audit professionals. It carries a working trial balance sized for large consolidation and fund clients, workpaper management with status tracking, financial statement reporting, real-time collaboration, and Audit Intelligence Analyze for scanning transactions to surface risk. It is the published cloud destination for firms migrating off Workpapers CS or Accounting CS.
What moves when you migrate Accounting CS to Engagement Manager?
Thomson Reuters' migration guidance covers workpapers with their trial balance links and formulas, current and prior year adjusted, report and tax balances, account numbers, descriptions and type codes, tax and property codes, and custom account classifications and groupings. Firms create engagements first, then move documents and import trial balance data through structured Excel exports and mapping. Migration is selective rather than all-or-nothing.
Can AIStatements replace Accounting CS?
Not as a ledger. Accounting CS holds the client's books and runs client payroll, and AIStatements does neither. It replaces the part of the suite that turns balances into a finished statement set, which for a compilation-heavy practice is the part used every month. Firms that keep their bookkeeping in QuickBooks or Xero and only needed Accounting CS for the statement output replace more of it than firms running payroll inside the suite.
What is the best Accounting CS alternative for a small write-up firm?
It depends on which of the three jobs you are replacing. For the ledger, QuickBooks Online Accountant or Xero with a firm roster. For the workpaper layer, a standalone working trial balance tool such as EZ Trial Balance or Quick Trial Balance Pro. For the deliverable, a statement generator such as AIStatements. Many small firms find that the ledger they already use plus a statement generator covers what the suite was doing.
