PPC SMART Practice Aids Alternative for Compilations and Reviews Before the Sunset

PPC SMART Practice Aids sunsets on December 31, 2026, according to Thomson Reuters, which is moving customers to Guided Assurance (the renamed Checkpoint Engage) at a promotional price with equivalent SMART Practice Aids and Checkpoint Tools included. Firms that audit should price Guided Assurance against AuditFile ($199 or $299 per user per month), CaseWare and CCH Engagement. Firms that mainly used SMART for compilation and review checklists can keep the PPC guides they license and move the statement drafting itself to AIStatements, which builds a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow from a trial balance in about a minute, from $24 a month billed yearly.

Thomson Reuters retires SMART at the end of 2026 and points every customer to Guided Assurance. If most of what you ran through SMART was compilations and reviews, you have more than one place to land.

The PPC SMART Practice Aids sunset and what Thomson Reuters is offering

Thomson Reuters states it plainly on its Guided Assurance upgrade page, read 15 October 2026: "SMART sunsets December 31, 2026." The same page asks customers to start planning the upgrade now and offers Guided Assurance at a promotional price, with "equivalent SMART Practice Aids and Checkpoint Tools at no additional cost." No dollar amount, discount size or offer deadline is printed. Getting the number means contacting a representative.

SMART was never a standalone engagement product. Thomson Reuters describes it as a layer that brings advanced functionality to the PPC Practice Aids a firm already licenses, run alongside whatever engagement management software the firm uses, with PPC libraries the firm downloads and maintains. Its help pages list the modules: Risk Assessment, Internal Control, Disclosure, Field Work, Audit Essential (including SMART Start for small, non-complex entities), the full Audit Suite, and a Compilation and Review module with industry checklists and forms.

Guided Assurance is the cloud replacement. It used to be called Checkpoint Engage, and Thomson Reuters sells it beside Engagement Manager (formerly AdvanceFlow) as its Cloud Audit Suite. Its product page leads with risk-based audits and single audits, AI risk identification that compares your risks with similar engagements, real-time collaboration and automatic PPC updates. What it costs, and what a small firm should ask before signing, is in our Thomson Reuters Guided Assurance pricing guide.

Why small firms are looking at alternatives to the default upgrade

A forced migration is the one moment a firm re-prices its whole engagement stack instead of renewing on autopilot. The default path is the vendor's, and it is a sensible one for an audit practice already standardized on PPC methodology. But the move changes three things at once: the software goes from installed libraries to a cloud subscription, the pricing goes from what you paid for SMART to a new quote, and the product is built around audits first.

Look at what your firm actually ran through SMART last year. Many small firms bought the Compilation and Review module and used it to keep SSARS checklists, engagement letters and documentation consistent across a few dozen clients, with an audit or two a year at most. For that firm, moving to an audit management system to keep a checklist workflow is buying a lot of platform to replace a small part of it.

The second issue is timing. December 31 lands in the middle of year-end, with the busiest compilation month straight after it. Whatever you move to needs to be running before January, and that argues for tools you can price today and start using the same week, not a project that waits on a sales cycle and onboarding calendar.

SMART Practice Aids alternatives for firms that audit

If you sign audit opinions, you need an engagement platform with a methodology behind it, and the realistic choices are four. Guided Assurance with Engagement Manager keeps you inside PPC content and is the least disruptive move for a firm whose staff learned audits on PPC programs. Ask whether the promotional price is a first-year figure and what renewal looks like.

AuditFile is the cloud platform built for small and mid-sized firms, and the only one in the category that prints its price: Professional at $199 per user per month ($179 on an annual agreement, up to 15 users) and Pro Plus at $299 ($249 annual, unlimited users), with a 14-day trial, read 15 October 2026. It runs audit, review and compilation engagements in the browser. That price gives you a benchmark for any Thomson Reuters quote.

CaseWare Working Papers, with CaseWare Cloud beside it, and CCH ProSystem fx Engagement or its CCH Axcess successor are the other two, both quote-only. Each is compared in detail on our CaseWare alternatives and CCH ProSystem fx Engagement alternative pages, and the whole category, including newer AI platforms, is on audit software for CPA firms.

A SMART Practice Aids alternative for compilation and review work

The PPC guides themselves are not the thing being retired. Thomson Reuters is sunsetting the SMART software layer. A firm that values PPC's compilation and review checklists can keep its guide subscription and work from the forms, which is how many firms ran compilations before SMART existed. What disappears is the automation around them, and the most time-consuming piece of a compilation was never the checklist. It is turning the client's trial balance into a formatted, tied set of statements.

AIStatements does that step. Upload an adjusted trial balance as a CSV, or a QuickBooks or Xero export, and it returns an income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement that tie to each other, with a written analysis of what moved and why. It takes about a minute per company, there is nothing to install, and the price is on the page: from $24 a month billed yearly for one company, with Growth and Firm plans for firms working across a client roster.

It is not a methodology product and it is fair to say so. It keeps no SSARS documentation, generates no engagement letters or checklists and issues no accountant's report, so you keep your PPC forms or your engagement platform for that. How the drafting step fits a compilation practice is laid out on our financial statement compilation software page, and the ledger-to-statements route on trial balance to financial statements.

How to plan the move before December 31, 2026

Start with an engagement count by type from last year: audits, reviews, compilations, preparations and recurring management statements. That one table decides most of the rest. A practice where audits are the majority of hours should get the Guided Assurance quote in writing, get an AuditFile trial running beside it, and compare the two on the same engagement.

A practice where compilations and reviews dominate should split the decision. Keep or drop the PPC guide subscription on its own merits, and move the statement production to a drafting tool now, while there is time to run a few clients through it before year-end. Firms with a full client list should start at financial statement software for accounting firms.

Whichever route you take, ask Thomson Reuters three things in writing before the end of the year: what happens to engagement files created in SMART after the sunset, whether they remain readable, and whether the promotional price carries into the second year. Those answers are what turns a deadline into a decision you can defend to your partners.

Common questions

Is PPC SMART Practice Aids being discontinued?

Yes. Thomson Reuters states on its Guided Assurance upgrade page that SMART sunsets December 31, 2026, and it is moving customers to Guided Assurance, the renamed Checkpoint Engage. The offer includes Guided Assurance at a promotional price with equivalent SMART Practice Aids and Checkpoint Tools at no additional cost. Terms and amounts are only given by a representative.

What is replacing SMART Practice Aids?

Thomson Reuters is replacing it with Guided Assurance, a cloud audit management system with PPC methodology, sold alongside Engagement Manager (formerly AdvanceFlow) as its Cloud Audit Suite. Guided Assurance works with the engagement manager of your choice. Firms can also move to AuditFile, CaseWare or CCH Engagement, or keep the PPC guides and use a separate tool for statement drafting.

What is the best SMART Practice Aids alternative for compilations?

For an engagement file with compilation documentation, AuditFile is the one platform with a published price, $199 per user per month. For firms whose real time sink is producing the statements, AIStatements drafts a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow from a trial balance or QuickBooks export in about a minute, from $24 a month billed yearly, while the PPC checklists stay where they are.

How much does Guided Assurance cost?

Thomson Reuters does not publish a Guided Assurance price. Read on 15 October 2026, its product pages offer a demo, a product tour and a contact form, and the upgrade page for SMART customers mentions a promotional price without a figure. Budget from a written quote and compare it with AuditFile, the one audit platform that prints a per-user price.

Can I keep using SMART Practice Aids after December 31, 2026?

Thomson Reuters has not published detailed end-of-life terms beyond the sunset date on its upgrade page. Treat December 31, 2026 as the last day of support and updates, and ask your representative in writing whether existing SMART engagement files stay readable afterward, so archived workpapers remain available for peer review.

Can AIStatements replace SMART Practice Aids?

Not completely. AIStatements has no SSARS checklists, risk assessment or audit programs, so it does not replace the methodology side of SMART. It replaces the statement drafting step: upload a trial balance or a QuickBooks or Xero export and get tied statements with written analysis in about a minute. Firms pair it with PPC guides or an engagement platform.
