Digits Accounting Alternative: Digits AI Accounting, Digits Accounting Pricing and Keeping QuickBooks Compared

The main Digits alternatives are QuickBooks Online and Xero with an AI bookkeeping add-on such as Booke AI for teams that want to keep their ledger, Pilot or Puzzle for startups that want the books done for them, and AIStatements for teams whose need is finished statements. Digits costs $65 a month on Essentials and $100 on Core, read from digits.com/pricing on 25 September 2026, with a 30-day trial and one subscription per business. AIStatements builds a tied P&L, balance sheet and cash flow with written analysis from a QuickBooks, Xero, CSV or trial balance export from $39 a month, and does not ask you to change ledgers.

Digits is an AI-native general ledger that replaces QuickBooks or Xero rather than sitting on top of it. If what you actually wanted was cleaner monthly statements with the analysis written, you can get that from the books you already keep, without moving them.

What Digits AI accounting actually is

Digits describes itself as the first AI-native general ledger for business owners and accountants. That wording matters. Digits is not a reporting layer that reads your QuickBooks file; it is the accounting system. Transactions come in from more than 12,000 bank and payroll connections, the AI categorizes and reconciles them around the clock, and the P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement update as it goes. Invoicing, bill pay, a mobile app, a developer API and an "Ask Digits" assistant sit in the same product.

For a young company starting its books from scratch, that is a strong offer. There is no separate bookkeeping app to wire up, statements are live rather than monthly, and the dashboards show runway, burn and revenue without a spreadsheet in between. Digits supports both cash and accrual methods, and its Core plan adds dimensional accounting by department or location and automated schedules. If you are choosing a ledger today and want the AI to do the bookkeeping, Digits belongs on the shortlist and we would not argue you out of trying it.

Why US teams look for a Digits accounting alternative

The first reason is the migration. Moving to Digits means moving your books: history, chart of accounts, open invoices and bills, bank rules, and every downstream habit built around QuickBooks or Xero. Your CPA, your payroll provider, your lender and your tax preparer are probably set up around the ledger you use now. For an established business the switching cost is real, and it is paid before you see a single better report.

The second is the accounting firm view. A bookkeeping or CPA firm with forty clients on QuickBooks Online cannot move them all to a new ledger to get better monthly reporting. The firm needs something that works on the files the clients already have, including the ones still on QuickBooks Desktop or sending a CSV out of an industry system.

The third is that live statements are not the same as a finished pack. Digits shows you real-time financials and management reports. What an owner, a board or a bank credit officer receives each month is usually a formatted P&L, balance sheet and cash flow that tie, with a paragraph explaining why margin fell or where the cash went. Somebody still has to write that paragraph.

The fourth is price per company. Digits charges one subscription per business, so a group of three companies on Core is $300 a month before any payment fees. That is fair for a full ledger with bookkeeping included, and a lot if all you needed from it was the reporting.

Digits accounting pricing

Read from digits.com/pricing on 25 September 2026, Digits sells three plans for businesses. Essentials is $65 a month for solopreneurs and early-stage businesses. Core is $100 a month, marked most popular, and adds dimensional accounting and automated schedules. Pro is listed at $250 a month for scaling businesses with internal finance teams and adds budget versus actuals and custom reports and dashboards, although the page marked it as not yet available when we read it. Every plan includes AI bookkeeping and reconciliation, real-time financial statements, bank and payroll connections, invoicing, bill pay and a 30-day free trial, with no setup fee.

Two costs sit outside the plan price. Multiple businesses need separate subscriptions, and payment processing is charged per transaction; directory listings put Digits Pay at $0.50 per ACH payment and $2 per check, and Digits points to its help center for the current fee table.

Accounting firms buy differently. Its Accounting Partner Program page, read the same day, publishes no per-client figures: it offers partner-only plans, discounts that grow with the number of clients on Digits, free Digits for the firm's own books, and firm tools such as a close tracker, custom review checks and a firm performance dashboard. In April 2026 it also announced outcome-based pricing for firms, reported by CPA Practice Advisor and Accounting Today: a firm is charged only for clients where 95 percent or more of transactions are zero-touch, meaning nobody created or edited them before the close. No per-client figure was published with that announcement, so ask for one in writing.

AIStatements publishes every tier and does not charge per user. Starter is $39 a month billed yearly or $49 month to month for one company. Growth is $99 a month billed yearly or $119 month to month for five companies. Firm is $289 a month billed yearly or $349 month to month for up to 25 client companies, with client workspaces, preparer and reviewer roles and white-label packs. The full list is on the pricing page.

Digits competitors, by what you are really buying

Most lists of Digits alternatives mix three different purchases, and it helps to separate them before you compare prices.

If you want a new ledger with the bookkeeping automated, the comparison is Digits against QuickBooks Online and Xero, and for startups against done-for-you services such as Pilot or ledgers built for founders such as Puzzle. If you want to keep QuickBooks or Xero and have AI do the categorization and reconciliation inside it, look at the add-ons on our AI accounting software comparison, where Booke AI, Docyt, Numeric and Truewind are priced side by side, and at the AI bookkeeping software pricing breakdown.

If what you want is the output, the monthly statements with the story written, you do not need to replace or automate the ledger at all. That is the job AIStatements does, and it is also covered from the dashboard angle on Syft Analytics alternatives and Fathom alternatives.

What AIStatements does instead

You keep your ledger. Export a general ledger, a transaction list or an adjusted trial balance from QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero or anything that writes a CSV, and upload it. AIStatements reads the columns, builds the profit and loss statement, the balance sheet and the statement of cash flows, and checks that they tie: net income flows into retained earnings, and ending cash on the cash flow statement matches cash on the balance sheet.

It then writes the analysis in plain English, computes gross and net margin, burn, runway, current ratio and days sales outstanding, flags lines that look wrong, and exports a PDF and an Excel workbook in about a minute. On Growth you get quarterly, trailing-twelve-month and trend views and a board-deck layout. On Firm each client has its own workspace and a reviewer approves the pack before it goes out under the firm's name. The monthly deliverable is laid out on monthly financial reporting package, and the QuickBooks route on QuickBooks financial statements.

What AIStatements does not do is bookkeeping. It does not categorize bank transactions, reconcile accounts, send invoices or pay bills. If the reason you looked at Digits was to stop doing the books by hand, Digits or an AI bookkeeping add-on is the right purchase, and AIStatements can still produce the pack from whatever ledger you end up on.

How to decide between Digits and keeping your ledger

Start with where the pain is. If it is the bookkeeping itself, hours a month spent categorizing, reconciling and chasing receipts, then a new AI ledger can pay for itself and the migration is worth planning. Run the 30-day Digits trial on a real bank account and see how many transactions it gets right without you.

If the books are already kept, by you, a bookkeeper or your CPA, and the pain is turning them into something an owner, a board or a lender will read, then changing ledgers is the long way round. Run one month of your existing export through AIStatements and compare the pack with what you would have sent. For one company the decision is $39 to $49 a month against a system migration. For a firm, it is whether to move clients at all.
